Smoking 101

I just read a book entitled Public Health Nursing in the Philippines a while ago and guess what, I LEARNED A LOT. I read about the lesson topic about Smoking: A serious problem.

Tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 43 of which have been proven to be carcinogenic. Some of these toxic chemicals and gasses include the following:

1. Acetone - used in nail polish remover
2. Acetic acid - used in vinegar
3. Ammonia - used in food and tilet cleaners
4. Arsenic - used to make rat poison
5. Butane - used in cigarette lighter fluid
6. Cadmum - used in rechargable batteries
7. Carbon Monoxide - found in exhaust fumes
8. Formaldehyde - used to preserve dead bodies
9. Hexamine - used in lighter fluid
10. Hydrogen cynide - used in gas chambers
11. Methane - used like gasoline
12. Naphthalene - used to make moth balls
13. Nicotine - used in insecticide
14. Nitrobenzene - used a gasoline additive
16. DDT/Diedrin - used in insecticide
17. Ethanol - alcohol

18. Stearic Acid - used in candle wax
19. Toluene - used as industrial solvent
20. Vinyl chloride - used to make PVC pipe

After reading those, something just tickled my mind... Why do people smoke even if they already know that it has harmful effects? Some say it's very addicting. Addicting??? How can they be accdicted to something hazardous? I think those people who smoke have gone nuts. I mean, isn't it ironic? They already knew it's harmful effects yet they still keep on smoking. God bless those chain smokers.
